A Love Letter to Slow Summers: The Jules & Gem Guide to Self-Care While Traveling

We spend months looking forward to summer vacation, then sprint through it – cramming in activities, skipping sleep, abandoning every routine that keeps us grounded – and sometimes come back feeling like we need a vacation from our vacation. We want to help prevent that feeling – here's how we think about self-care while traveling!

Protect Your Sleep Like It's Sacred

This is the one we hear the most pushback on, and we get it, you're in a new place. There's so much to see, the night market stays open late – but here's the thing: you cannot be fully present for any of it running on empty.

Prioritize your required hours each night. If you're crossing time zones, give yourself a day to adjust before stacking a full itinerary. A short afternoon rest can mean the difference between a magical evening and a miserable one.

This is where our Pikake (or your favorite fragrance) in our room spray. A single spritz before bed signals to your body that it's time to slow down. Scent memory is real, and there's nothing like the smell of pikake to make even a hotel room feel like home.

Move in Ways That Feel Good, Not Obligatory

"Working out on vacation" can sound like something a person with a very organized carry-on says. But movement doesn't have to mean a hotel gym at 6am.

A slow morning walk to find coffee. A swim before the beach fills up. A yoga class in a neighborhood you've never been to. These things wake up the body, help you digest, and give you a reason to wander.

After all that moving, your skin deserves something good. Our bath & body collection was made for exactly this moment – smooth on our body lotion (it's TSA-friendly!) post-swim, post-shower, post-long-day-of-doing-everything, and let the softness of our islands come to you.

Build a Wind-Down Routine You'll Actually Keep

The hour before bed is quietly one of the most important parts of the day – and one of the first things to go when we travel. We stay out later, skip the skincare, fall asleep with the TV on, and wonder why we feel off.

Your wind-down routine doesn't have to be elaborate to travel with you. Journal for five minutes. Do a two-step skincare routine. And reach for one of our 2oz candles – small enough to slip into any bag, powerful enough to turn the end of a long travel day into something that actually feels intentional.

Let Yourself Actually Slow Down

Here's the part nobody puts in the travel guide: the point of vacation is not to maximize; it's to exhale. The slow mornings, the long lunches, the afternoon where you did essentially nothing.

So when your legs are done doing the most and your itinerary finally runs out of ideas, draw a bath. Drop in our bath salts, let the steam carry the scent up – pikake, passion fruit & mint, whatever version of the islands you packed – and do absolutely nothing productive for twenty minutes. Hotel and home rental tubs were made for this.

Take the long way. Sit with the scent a little longer. Slow summers are worth it.
